Show SMS of train ticket or be fined

Passengers failing to show the SMS containing reservation messages with full details of the booked e-ticket will be slapped with a fine of Rs 50, Railways said. The public transporter has decided to accept SMS also sent by IRCTC containing PNR, train no, date of journey and class on booking e-ticket for undertaking journey, a move likely to be implemented shortly. "If the passenger fails to produce or display this SMS due to any eventuality such as loss or discharged mobile, laptop etc but has the prescribed proof of identity, a penalty of Rs 50 per ticket as applicable to such cases will be levied," said a railway statement.

This virtual message is treated on a par with the print-out of the e-ticket which is taken out by the passengers and is known as Electronic Reservation Slip (ERS). The ticket checking staff on-board or off-board will give excess fare ticket charge slip for the same, the statement said. The ID proof which a passenger can carry with him during the journey include voter photo ID card, passport, PAN card, driving licence, photo identity card issued by Central/State Government, student identity card, nationalised bank passbook with photograph, credit cards issued by banks and Aadhaar card.
